Wild Eats Hike and Learn

Wild Eats Hike and Learn with Cassy and Kirk

Date: Saturday, November 7, 2009

Time: 10:00 am

Location: Temescal Canyon Park, W Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90272 – Meet by the park information/history plaque.

Parking: Ample parking with a $7 on-your-honor state parking fee surrounds the trailhead. Free parking is also available within walking distance of the trailhead.

The Temescal Canyon Waterfall trail reveals some of California’s best wild edibles, including California Bay (Umbelularia californica), Black Sage (Salvia melifera), currants, and lemon berries.

The hike rewards both avid and armature hikers with beautiful views. A light 1/2 mile stroll to the waterfall and bridge provides a turn-around point, picnic spot, and rock climbing opportunities. Curious hikers can continue an additional 2.5 miles on steeper terrain to view new plant communities, as well as ocean and city views at the trail’s crest. Throughout the hike, Cassy and Kirk Aoyagi will provide insights about the microclimates and native foliage along the trail. Hikers will:

  • Become familiar with wild edibles and their uses
  • Learn which plants perform best in the dry season
  • See plants that produce bountiful foliage on rainfall alone
  • Understand which natives can be used to replace thirsty foliage
  • Enjoy fabulous views and the company of other hiking and native enthusiasts
