VALUED CUSTOMERS & FRIENDS+

We enjoyed a truly wild and engaging Wild Eats Hike and Learn with the kids of the Pacific Palisades Parent Camp Co-Op. More than 20 kids, aged 6-9 hiked, picnicked and learned which California native plants are edible or medicinal.

This trip reminded us of the wonderful natives tough enough to thrive when planted during the heat of summer, including: coyote bush, California buckwheat, and California fuchsia. Their biggest challenge? Folks who kill them with kindness! They simply don’t need the extra water. So, if your green thumb has been itching for fall, make it happy, get out there and stick something in the ground!

Sincerely,
Cassy and Kirk Aoyagi

WHAT TO EXPECT+

Native and edible gardens are highly productive in the fall, so are we! To keep our sustainably maintained gardens optimally beautiful and hassle-free, we will:

  • Ensure natives are not being overwatered as temperatures rise (they love this time of year!)
  • Remove volunteers, invasive plants and infectious material to reduce pests and disease
  • Prune Oak Trees to maintain form and function
  • Mulch heavily to protect plants from summer heat and Santa Ana winds
  • Harvest summer vegetables and replenishing and replanting veggies and herbs for a strong fall harvest
  • Bring the prettiest cut flowers and foliage into homes for arrangement
  • Rinse foliage to improve transpiration during high heat periods
  • Stage residence with extra lighting, heating and container gardens for the final BBQs of summer

Craving Gray on a Sunny Day

USGBC Green Home Guide.
Earlier in the year, we looked at the benefits of putting our limited rainwater to good use with water catchment and infiltration strategies.  Now that LA’s picture-perfect weather makes it tough to keep our gardens picture-perfect without irrigation, our teams field plenty of questions about graywater..

Unlike the other water harvesting strategies we’ve covered, graywater is always “re-watering” with already used water.  Graywater comes from sources from with in a home or business, like the laundry machine, bathtubs, sinks and showers. The outlets for these sources are diverted into the landscape or on-property storage instead of the sewer. Read More
