Think Newly Built Homes Are Problem Free? Think Again.

Interest.com. July 18, 2012.  By Amy Fontinelle:  Buying new construction seems like a great way to avoid the hassles and expenses that come with buying a home that’s been around the block.  Any older house will have things that need repair or replacement. Brand-new homes are perfect and move-in ready. Right?  This is a faulty belief that can leave you battling issues with your home for years to come. Read Story

VALUED CUSTOMERS & FRIENDS+

Thank you for helping us transform the face of Los Angeles! In July, we truly reap the rewards of our work together. As we travel from neighborhood to neighborhood, we see more and more bold, beautiful native gardens thriving in the summer heat. We also see your influence as neighbors follow your lead and neighborhoods transform into drought tolerant wonderlands. At Dwell on Design last month, we had question after question about how to get the distinctly California aesthetic you’ve achieved – thank you, and congratulations!

Sincerely,
Cassy and Kirk Aoyagi

Save the World with Your Yard
Tips: You know that replacing your lawn with an IdealMow™ lawn alternative and gardening with natives will save your family loads of money and time and give your home all the curb appeal of a Showcase Home or Holmby Hills Estate. Did you also know it can save the world? WHAT TO EXPECT+

If you have a native garden, your garden is off the hook right now! Native grasses are vibrantly green, and summer blooms include Eriogonum fasciculatum, Trichostema lanata, Salvia clevlandii. Here is what we’ll do to keep everything operating at its peak:

Protect you from Tier 2 water prices:

  • Ensure natives are not being overwatered – they love this heat!
  • Eliminate run-off and overspray, inspect common sprinklers for leaks and ensure drip irrigation provides proper coverage
  • Manage timers for optimal watering on minimal days (if you are DIY-ing this activity, check out the BeWaterWise Calculator to get your schedule just right for your garden)
  • Water by hand where necessary
  • Once per month deep soaking of mature trees

Set the stage for your garden party:

  • Rinse foliage to improve transpiration in high heat and keep things lovely
  • Prune Oak Trees to maintain form and shade
  • Mulch to refresh garden beds and retain water
  • Bring the prettiest cut flowers and foliage into the homes for arrangements
  • Stage residence with extra lighting, heating and container gardens for your next BBQ!

Team Update

Thank you to Al Rosen, Isara Ongswiseth, Jill Van Sickle and Stephanie Reed, who all supported the FormLA booth Dwell on Design – it made the show feel like an ongoing party! Thanks also to John Cook and the FormLA design/build team, who did a beautiful job installing the modern wonderland at Dwell Outdoor. See More Photos.

Leigh Jerrard from Greywater Corps provided an in-depth workshop in greywater applications for the FormLA team. Synchronizing graywater into native, food and efficient irrigation systems can be challenging, and we believe we are on the forefront of integrating these strategies thanks to the profound partnership and insight practiced by Leigh and graywater – thank you!
