VALUED CUSTOMERS & FRIENDS+

We enjoyed a beautiful April this year… Thanks to the Clayton, Fimbres, and Kay families! Thank you for graciously opening your gardens!

We are also grateful to the Creative Arts Group for providing incredibly well informed (and fun!) docents and for including us on the Art of the Garden Tour.

Thank you to those of you who joined us and brought your savvy questions to our designers. We hope everything here helps keep you inspired!

Sincerely,
Cassy and Kirk

We always get great questions from you during garden tours! Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

Green Your Garden with Ferns

Indoor-Outdoor in LA

Los Angeles Times. By Janet Kinosian:
Don’t exclude ferns from your dream garden just because there’s a drought on. Water-wise yet luxuriant ferns might sound contradictory. After all, don’t ferns and their flowy green fronds spread on wet forest floors and need constant spritzing when grown inside?   Read More

5 Ways to Be (Irrigation) Smart

Indoor-Outdoor Life

By Kirk Aoyagi: You can look high and low in our gardens – you won’t find a sprinkler. Natives and climate compatible plants thrive with hyhrozoned, low-flow, sub-surface, drip irrigation on weather controllers. Here is what that means in English:  Read More

WHAT TO EXPECT+

We may not have had much in the way of April showers, but we had enough to bring May flowers!

Blooming Now in LA

Fragrant sages, eye-popping Jack Flash, and delicate Carpenteria are all in bloom – in gardens and in the wild. Here’s a little help in identifying the blooms you love!  See May Blooms

Sustaining Your Garden

Remember abundant foliage makes for abundant fuel. Join us in taking the following steps.

Protect Your Home:

  • Keep foliage from the ground – raise low branches
  • Prune to open shrubbery and reduce fuel
  • Remove all dead material and weed growth
  • Clear foliage away from rooflines and eaves
  • Maintain proper spacing among plants
  • Follow fire code restrictions within 200 feet of structures

Protect your health… and your wallet:

  • Eliminate mosquito-breeding still water
  • Inspect sprinklers for leaks and overspray
  • Optimize drip irrigation coverage and timing
  • Mulch to maintain moisture and prevent weeds
  • Water by hand where necessary

Ready gardens for summer:

  • Replenish vegetable and herb gardens…. Mmmm basil!
  • Evaluate summer oak tree pruning needs
  • Take time to smell the salvia!
