Tips: Home Color, a bookazine, highlights a wide variety of exemplary color palates from showcase homes around the country. The Andalusian Courtyard at the 2012 Pasadena Showcase House of design illustrates an invigorating turquoise, blue and spice palate. Resolved to Go Dry? My New Year Favorites

Tips: While gardens across the USA are buried under deep snow, ours are ripe for planting! Now is a great time to replace thirsty foliage with a lovely native that will thrive when the rain stops falling. Here’s a wet-to-dry exchange from our to-plant list:

Fremontodendron (Flannel bush): If you love the vibrant colors and dense foliage of bougainvillea, you may also enjoy this beauty! A dwarf variety like ‘Ken Taylor’ will fill a 10×10 space while the larger Fremontodendron californium needs twice the room. Usually prone to root rot and hard to get established during warmer and dryer seasons, this is the plant to get into the ground now!

WHAT TO EXPECT+

The New Year is a time for list making. If sprucing up your garden is on yours, borrow from our list of to-dos! We will be:

Providing rainy-season peace of mind:

  • Clean gutters to prevent home damage from leaking
  • Monitoring run-off strategies and water catchment systems from rainbarrels to infiltration pits to protect homes and slopes
  • Re-staking trees to ensure proper support against seasonal winds
  • Adjusting irrigation quantity and timers
  • Making sure rain sensors work

Doing the heavy lifting that ensures a beautiful Spring:

  • Cutting grasses to their bases
  • Evaluating empty spaces for great fill-ins (including this month’s wet-to-dry exchanges)
  • Providing special feeding to citrus and acid loving plants
  • Pruning ornamental shrubs, conifers, deciduous trees, roses, ornamental fruits, native and Mediterranean foliage to make room for spring growth and inspire proper form
  • Spraying roses and ornamental fruits with ecofriendly dormant oil and organic amending with blood meal
