See Sun Valley Shine

A Sun-Friendly Sun Valley Garden Debuts on the Native Plant Garden Tour

March 7, 2017. By Isara Ongwiseth:  The Woods’ 1923 stone cottage has fairytale charm amplified by its position within the sidewalk-free equestrian community of Sun Valley. The garden that surrounds the home is an idealized reflection of L.A.’s sunny wild spaces.

The Woods dreamed of filling their corner lot with a garden just as natural and charming as their historically registered home. With that direction, we worked to design an aesthetic in keeping with the natural environment of Sun Valley, one that would deliver the sense of serenity and exploration we find exploring the area’s foothills.

Everything within this garden flows. The walkways curve and wind with natural traffic patterns from each street to the doorway. Whether visiting via foot or hoof, visitors hear a delightful crunch making their way along the decomposed granite paths, practical only in Mediterranean climates like L.A.

Each constructed detail reflects the rustic aesthetic of the home. We reclaimed natural stone and cobble from the site and paired it with waist-height foliage to subtly define the garden’s space and marry its aesthetic to the architecture. Within the garden, custom seating and a gurgling water feature are crafted from the same reclaimed stones. The seating also integrates fossils collected by the owners for added charm and meaning.

Selected from our natural plant palette, the garden’s foliage reflects the foothills surrounding Sun Valley. Feathery yarrows and sagebrushes lend a soft feel, while the fresh fragrance of salvias fill the air. Delightful to humans as well as birds and butterflies!
