Join La Canada Valley Beautiful as they host this community workshop at La Canada Public Library!

Cassy Aoyagi and the FormLA team will donate time to native and sustainable garden pruning and maintenance demonstrations.  Be ready to learn and join in the fun… please bring:

  • A sharp and clean pair of pruners
  • Gloves
  • Sunhat
  • Friends
  • Questions about native and sustainable gardening!

While there, enjoy the compelling and unusual beauty of the newly-installed Australian drought-tolerant demonstration garden.  The Australian garden is the third of five drought tolerant “Gardens of the World” to be installed at the Library.  The previously planted California and Mediterranean Basin gardens are also in luscious, full bloom and a site to see.

La Canada Valley Beautiful will serve light refreshments and snacks.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our April garden tours! We are particularly grateful to the Markotas, Oteros, Rosens, and Veloz for opening their outdoor spaces for the enjoyment of garden lovers – we truly can’t thank you enough for your generosity and enthusiastic support of us.

Big thanks is also do to the vendors that helped make our Wanderland Tea Garden at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design truly magical. This month, we will showcase yet another garden dear to our hearts, the Gardens of the World demonstration gardens at La Canada Public Library. We will be training community members to care for the California, Mediterranean basin, and newly-installed Australian gardens. Grab your gloves and pruning sheers and join us!

WHAT TO EXPECT+

Watch for FormLA teams helping you and your garden prepare for a hot, dry summer. Please fax your fire inspection notice to us, and we’ll take care of the rest: 818-353-6837 We will be:

Protecting homes from fires.

  • Maintaining proper spacing among plants
  • Raising low branches on shrubs to keep foliage off of the ground
  • Removing all dead material and weed growth
  • Opening shrubbery and reduce volume of flammable material with structural pruning
  • Clearing material away from roof lines and eaves
  • Following fire code restrictions within 200′ of structures

Protecting you from “tier 2” water prices.

  • Eliminating run-off and overspray, inspecting common sprinklers for leaks and ensuring drip irrigation provides proper coverage, and recommending improvements where necessary
  • Managing timers for optimal watering on minimal days,
  • Watering by hand where necessary

Correction Notice: The March newsletter referenced a donation from ET Water for the City of Santa Monica’s sustainable demonstration gardens. This donation was provided to FormLA, which, in turn, provided ET Water devices to the City at no charge.

Celebrate Theodore Payne Foundation's 50th Anniversary
Cassy Aoyagi led a workshop on Landscaping for LEED and WELO with the City of Santa Monica’s Russell Ackerman at the Municipal Green Building Conference and on drought tolerant gardening at the annual California Native Plant Society expo.

Cassy also presented sustainable landscaping for historical sites to a Historic Preservation Overlay Zones conference.

Historic Preservation Overlay Zone Conference Presentation

Cassy Aoyagi will address models for sustainable landscaping in character with architecture and history at the citywide Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) Concerence.

As part of a three person panel, Cassy will explore lawns and lawn alternatives as they relate to historical character and best practices in sustainable landscaping.  The panel is hosted in conjunction with LA Conservancy.
